Psychology of dressing up as film characters in public?!

Question: Anyone know the psychology of going to, say a Star Wars film première, dressed as a character, especially when you are middle aged? I don't think it's in any way healthy, but I'd be interested to know if anyone has looked into the psychology of nerdism, so to speak ;-)

What i get from it is just the nature of the occasion. Why do people dress up for Halloween? Dressing in a particular way isn't a mental disorder. Its like a hobby. For instance have you ever been to a medevil fair? They dress like the 1400's and 1500's. I work at a local museum in North Carolina and i know there is a standing Guilford militia that go to revolutionary war reenactments. These people aren't payed to do this its a hobby. Suppose that seeing a storm trooper from a Star Wars movie having a leisure conversation with some random Vader or walking through a forest of plastic light sabers may not be historical, but being in amongst people that appreciate your love of a particular movie or show or even historical event has its own reward.
Maybe they just want to fit in or something?
Emulation of their hero. Look at when the Matrix first came out and how many people were starting to wear black trench coats and sunglasses.
they are just idiots
I don't see how it is unhealthy at all...It's just them expressing their interest in a fantasy theme..people like to get involved with stuff they are passionate about. It's just their interest as much as anything we others like.

For some I'm sure it's a way of escaping every day life and dressing up gets them into the real feel of being someone they think it would be cool to be.

It's just for fun!
When you look at what counts as fashionable at the moment, I think dressing up as a cling on might be an improvement.Whoever in their right mind thought that bat wing jumpers and similarly horrendous 80's paraphanalia should have been revived, deserves to be dressed as Scotty and fired into the nether regions of the galaxy!
