In Coolhand Luke, why does Luke die with a smile on his face?!

Question: I not real sure why he did that?

Answers: I not real sure why he did that?
he was a rebel
and didnt want to die appearing as if something was wrong
he also knew his rebelious struggle was over and he would now be at peace
cuz he's cool
well cos he's happy init! duh!
Yes
because they never "beat" him
it was gas, from all the eggs.
because they did not break him.... all through out the movie was about breaking his spirit......yummy Paul Newman.....
One of my favorite movies, but you know, I don't know either. Luke is obviously a Christ figure. That is made perfectly obvious when he's lying, arms outstretched as though he's on the cross when the other inmates, fifty of 'em, are feeding him the last of those fifty eggs which, like Easter eggs, are symbolic of new life.

Also, Luke at one point, fed up of being and doing what the other inmates haven't the wherewithal to do for themselves, yells, "Stop feeding on me!" There too is an indication that like the Christ, contrary to the common notion, wants them to be their own saviors, be their own heroes.

Perhaps that's why he smiled. He made the supreme effort to be free, and that bullet set him free from his suffering.
Because no matter what they did to him - he was free. It was his last act of defiance. It was like he was saying 'I'm really free now".
