I always assumed that the mother and daughter are somehow still trapped in the "alternate reality" of Silent Hill. Remember in the movie when the women were running around in the school and her husband and the cop were in the same rooms as them but they couldn't see them? It's like they were in an alternate reality of the same world somehow. Originally there was no way out of Silent Hill when trapped in the alternate reality, but once they freed the spirit or whatever at the end, it opened up a way out of the town...so, they escaped from the town, but never made it back to the real world. Does that make sense? I don't think they died, but they're just trapped in the other world...

I've seen it 5 or 6 times...and I still don't get it.
What I can guess is that mom & daughter are dead, and their ghosts go back to the house thinking they are alive and husband "feels" them in the house
