It actually came from a TV series called Kung Fu starring David Carradine. .

Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine) is the orphaned son of an American man and a Chinese woman. He was raised in a Shaolin monastery, and was trained by the monks to be a Shaolin master.

The frequent use of flashbacks is used to recall particular lessons during Caine's training in the monastery while a child by his teacher, the blind Master Po.

In these flashbacks, Master Po called his young student "Grasshopper" as a reference to their first meeting in which young Caine said that to be blind must be the worst affliction. Master Po drew attention to the grasshopper at his feet which the blind master could hear but to which Caine had been oblivious and so showed that the pupil still had much to learn.
Kung Fu It was a TV show too in the 70s that starred David Carradine.
Kung Fu it was David Carredine??? ON the spelling but it was him. Some old guy called him grasshopper
Think it came from that old show kung fu with david carradine.
An old television series called "Kung Fu" which ran from 1972 - 1975. Very popular back then, and David Carredine played a Shaloin Monk that was traveling through old west in search of his brother, during the show he frequently had flashbacks to the days of when he was training and learning Kung Fu, and his master would refer to him as Grasshopper or Young Grasshopper. The link below gives you the whole synopsis of the show and some extra tid bits, hope this answers your question.
