Regarding "The Shining" Soundtrack ~

It is a failure of the capitalist system that a soundtrack to a **** film like "Batman and Robin" is in print, but the amazing soundtrack to "The Shining" is out of print, rare as hell and maddeningly hard to find.

There was only a vinyl release of the soundtrack from 1980. It had a small press run, and was recalled a few months later over copyright issues.

It’s a shame because it’s one of the greatest soundtracks ever. Wendy Carlos created two fantastic synthesizer pieces that are amazing. The rest of the soundtrack is orchestral pieces from avant garde composers from the 1920's as well as one or two early big-band pop songs. The overall record is very dark and eerie… much like the Kubrick movie itself.

With the possible exception of the two W. Carlos tracks, all of the individual tracks are available on cd. However, as a package with the Shining logo and pictures from the movie, those tracks are unavailable. Does that make sense? Should this fantastic soundtrack be forever out of print because of some greedy copyright holders?

Some bootleggers don’t think so either. I’d be skeptical of any cds made from the original vinyl… since the pieces are sparse and minimal, most vinyl copies will be click and pop central, and surprisingly, without a few of the tracks used in the movie.

My personal recommendation is to search for these MP3s on WinMX, Kazaa or the like.
