Well Michael Douglas' character worked for a defense contractor, hence the D-FENS plate on his car. At the time the US was at peace so business was slow and a lot of those contractors/engineers lost their jobs due to the economy and the peace. So obviously his position had become obsolete hence his comment, "his job lost him".
it's just another way of saying he is unemployed...
Just his way of saying he lost his job.
