Why are 99% of remakes so hideously bad these day?!

Question: I am a big time John Carpenter fan and every remake of one of his classics so far has been utterly horrid?
Anyone else notice this?
Has the Movie Industry just lost all originality or what?

Remakes are only about money. That's it. Like others have said, cash in on a popular flick and "update" it with gore, nudity, bad language or new "special effects" and release it upon the masses that are asses that will put butts in seats.

When something original does come out people tend to not go see it because they see so many bad original movies that they just give up, especially genre specific flicks.

Most hollywood flicks follow a tried and true formula and or copy one that sneaks in and sells tons of tickets. Think of your general hack and slash movie, everything is so predictable but then a movie like House of 1000 Corpses came along and completely changed the whole thing so that spun off Hostel - Saw etc...

Another perfect example would be the Blair Witch Project, personally I thought the movie was a total bore until the last 10 minutes but how many pseudo real films came out after it? The zombie craze was restarted with 28 Days Later and then it was time to remake Dawn of the Dead to cash in on the new faster zombies.

Personally out of the horror remakes of late, I was VERY skeptical of the Dawn of the Dead remake but I have to say I was shocked that I actually liked it! It even gave me a few nightmares the night after I saw it and it all had to do with that baby scene. Pretty freaky but also very suspenseful and well done. My hats are off to Zack for taking something that I thought I would be literally walking out of and really injecting some intense suspense and still some fun too. It's overall plot was based on the original Dawn but it was brought up to modern day standards and really had an impact, at least in my mind.

The new Halloween was atrocious though and really didn't add anything and was a complete waste of time. Watch out on the remake horizon you'll soon be seeing Night of the Living Dead (remade AGAIN) and Day of the Dead as well. This is really getting old. The Fog remake was pitiful, a child's movie compared to the original, and so many others are just plain bad. House of Wax, please, I wish someone would break the CGI computers and go back to the "analog" way to do things.

I mean every Sci-Fi Channel movie has CGI and it just looks AWFUL! Oh well, welcome to the 2000's. There are still plenty of good independent movies coming out but you have to look for them on DVD and really seek them out.

Hollywood will continue to release remakes as long as people keep flocking to them, quit going and buying them and they will stop but that won't happen unfortunately anytime soon.

YES they have lost all originality. 90% of remakes I generally hate. I think sometimes they shouldn't even attempt to remake a movie that is already legendary. Like Sound of Music would be a horrible remake. I also hate when they try to update it & make it modern. They should just retitle the movie & change the plot a little bit if they plan to remake movies.

It's all about the Benjamens.

People enjoy the bastardizing of the genius of what once was a brilliant movie. Something about taking a dump on a great classic film really sways the people these days, just like that dumbass song Soulja Boy.

You can't improve on a masterpiece.

yeah it really makes me sick why tamper with some thing that not broken

I love John Carpenter and the fact that they remade Halloween-a true horror classic was just awful. I think Hollywood knows that certain movies made money when they first came out so they think that they'll be a cash cow if they were released today. Maybe they should try reading a book now and then.

The original was a fresh idea when it came out. Modern remakes tend to include sex, nudity, or graphic violence to give it a modern flavor.

There is still a lot of original movies out there that are very good. Remakes are another story. They usually remake a great movie and can't possibly top it. I think they are doing it backwards. Remake a badly made movie that could have been good and do it better. Some had such a good idea, but poor writing or directing. What do you think?

It's all about special effects and not story line. I thought the remake of the exorcist would be fantastic but I was so disapointed. The original will always be the scariest movie I've ever seen.

The new writers suck, new directors, suck, all the new Hollywood people suck. No original ideas anyway; they remake the classics and even fail at that. No talent whatsoever.
Compare the original The Fog to the new version.

Exactly what Cat said. The only way remakes are ever better is because of improved special effects.
A lot depends on if you have ever seen the original. Sometimes if you see the remake first, you are disappointed in the original.
Sometimes the original is bad and never should have been remade in the first place.
About the only remake I thought was better was "Fun with Dick and Jane" Jim Carey made the movie a lot funnier.

I mean, I like Steve Martin but he could never top Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther.

You can only remake a movie that was total crap and make it good. Like The Departed was a good remake.
