WIDE-SCREEN DVD'S: Do You HATE THEM?!?!
Question: Most of my DVD's are wide-screen. I bare it, but I can't stand it! Those black bars are annoying. Why is it Full screen isn't always available? I wanna buy the Transformers DVD that just came out. But its in wide-screen. I'll still buy it. . . but's its gonna ruin the movie for me.
Anyone else hate wide-screen? And why don't most DVD's not come in both Full and Wide format?

What shape is a movie screen? Rectangle. Many DVDs were or are issued in letterbox and wide screen format in order to show the complete image from a theater on old style square TVs. That's the reason for the bars, it's putting a rectangle image on a square screen and filling in the top and bottom with blank strips. Nothing is lost in the image.
Without wide screen, VHS and DVD rely on Pan and Scan, which focuses on the main action without giving the full image. A good example of this is two characters talking on either side of a table. Wide screen will show them both as intended, while full screen will jump back and forth between speakers.
Most modern televisions are already rectangle (Wide screen) in shape, so there's no bars. So which do you prefer, the film as you saw it on screen, or one altered to fit ?
I'm the opposite. I love watching movies in widescreen. In fact, I only buy widescreen DVD's. I just like the theatrical look of it; plus, you can see things that can't be shown in fullscreen. I see everything else on TV in fullscreen, so widescreen is nice for a change.
I hate them too,that's why I bought one that can adjust to any size you want.
WIDESCREEN ISN'T THAT BAD,BUT LETTERBOX REALLY SUCKS.I BOUGHT THE ROCK AND ARMAGGEDON AND WAS PISSED TO FIND OUT IT'S ONLY IN LETTERBOX FORMAT
I also hate them. I heard somewhere I just don't remember where but they make them in wide screen because it's cheaper than full screen. I don't know how its cheaper but I hate it.
I don't like that either. They must assume that most people have a wide screen T.V., or maybe thats their tactic to get people to buy one, I don't know, but it is annoying. I don't think that theres anything we can do about it, but do what they want and go buy a widescreen.
