I didn't understand the Butterfly Effect, can someone explain it to me?!

Question: My understanding was that Evan's journals would take him back into time, in which he would change an event that happened in the past, and that would change the turn of events in his future. Is that what the movie is about? And why does Evan have blackouts?

Answers: My understanding was that Evan's journals would take him back into time, in which he would change an event that happened in the past, and that would change the turn of events in his future. Is that what the movie is about? And why does Evan have blackouts?

Every time Evan changes his past, he goes to the exact moments when he blacked out. In the early sections of the film we watch young Evan black out several times. Later, we see an adult Evan travel back in time to possess his former childhood self; it is through these temporal journeys that Evan is able to create new distinct timelines. In the first timeline we witness, Evan simply blacks out traumatic moments; later, he is able to revisit these blackout moments by re-reading journal entries about them, which suggests that the blackouts could have been caused by his ability to revisit the past and he "blacks out" when his future self is revisiting his past self. As revealed in the fifth timeline, Evan only began writing the journal entries in response to the blackouts. Thus, the blackouts caused Evan to write the journal, which allowed Evan to travel back to the blackouts, which in turn caused the blackouts in the first place, which caused Evan to write the journal -- a causality loop.

I don't know either. I understand what's happening, but I don't exactly know why. I've watched it many times, too =P

wooow i just used to watch this film on and on.i love it.its deep and with lots of different deep feelings .and everytime he goes back its strange how things changes totally.i love this film.and i really loved the end.it was sad that he didnt be able to be with her but it was perfect for both of them.and what was really great that hmmm that the only solution to every problem when he was child and when he later could be able to go back was so simple and that was that she goes and live with her own mom instead of her loving him and ask her mom to live with her sick dad.and everytime he go back i feel bad for each one of he's friends and even him when he couldnt walk again.the first time i felt for the girl who is miserbale and than he's friend who is in the hospital and the other one who love his sister so much that he wanted to kill him.and than him and seing his mom dying.

i know im talking about something u didnt ask but i just felt i wanted to just say how much i love it. :-)))hahaha
