Why is there a different ending of 1408 on the dvd than in theaters?!

Question: i didn't select "alternate ending" as there was no feature on the dvd, but it was a very differnt ending from what i saw in theaters, does anyone know why that is?

Because that ending was too gloomy to be shown in theaters

Director Mikael H?fstr?m has stated that the ending for 1408 was reshot because test audiences felt that the original ending was too much of a "downer".[9] The original ending, available exclusively on the two-disc collector's edition, sees the backdraft engulfing the room as Enslin hides under the bed, happy to see the room destroyed as he dies. Olin later approaches Lily and Enslin's agent at his funeral, where he unsuccessfully attempts to give back a box of Enslin's possessions and his tape recorder. Olin listens to the recording in his car, hearing Katie's voice on the tape and catches a quick glimpse of a horribly burnt Enslin in his rear view mirror. The film ends at the gutted room, with an apparition of Enslin disappearing after being called away by the voice of his daughter and the sound of a closing door.

Some people weren't happy with the ending of the theatrical release, I guess. Or maybe because the director had a choice between two endings, and they chose the one you saw in the theatrical release, but they now put it on the DVD.

because they are on dvd they can change endings.
for example the movie hide and go seek, the endings change on dvd. and the movie rest stop, it has several endings on the dvd.
