What old-time actor is better: Cary Grant or Clark Gable? Why?!

Question: Also, Elizabeth Taylor or Vivienne Leigh from Gone with the Wind? I'm an old movie buff!

Answers: Also, Elizabeth Taylor or Vivienne Leigh from Gone with the Wind? I'm an old movie buff!

I'm a film buff, too, and I say that it's absolutely impossible for me to say that one is better than the other because each is a remarkable performer with his or her own special skills.

Just this afternoon, I watched "Elephant Walk" (1954), in which Elizabeth Taylor replaced Vivien Leigh due to the latter's increasing mental problems, what we now call bipolar disorder. They left distance shots of Leigh in because the two women are similar. Did you know that Taylor nearly played Bonnie Butler in "GWTW"? Her mother decided against it, believing her daughter was too young. Instead, Cammie King plays the role.

Elizabeth Taylor might have an edge on Vivien Leigh for one reason: The latter's mental and emotional problems likely restricted her career. So, "Liz" (a nickname she hates) has starred in a wider array of films, especially since she is a graduate of the studio system. Compare their filmographies to see what you think. Don't base a decision on one or two movies:
Vivien Leigh:

Elizabeth Taylor:

Gable and Grant are equally wonderful, adept at both comedy and drama. Both are wonderful leading men though Gable might have an edge because he played more-adventurous roles, while Grant is noted for being the sophisticate, even when he's in films such as "North by Northwest". His full-out action film, "Gunga Din", was early in his career. Compare their filmographies, too; remind yourself of their many wonderful roles:

Cary Grant:

IMDB trivia: Ian Fleming modeled the James Bond character partially with Grant in mind.

I confess: I think Clark Gable is absolutely irresistible~"The King" of Hollywood. That devilish grin and growling voice...

Vivien Leigh is her name, and she did far more than "Gone With the Wind", so it's sad to remember her for only this film.

Jack Lemmon (not Lemon)

Clark Gable was the man & Liz Taylor.

Probably Cary Grant as Clark Gable was something in the mould of the 'John Wayne' type, who only ever really played 'John Wayne.'

Cary Grant had was able to stretch himself to play other types in the characters he was asked to portray.

I never liked Elizabeth Taylor much, so it has to be Vivienne Leigh.

Sash.

Cary Grant hands down, Liz was around longer but that only gives her more exposure.

I have seen many movies with these actors. For me Gary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor were the best actors. With Clark Gable one could tell he was acting, were as with Gary Grant, it was if he became the part he played. Jack Lemon was also one of the greatest actor ever for the same reason, he became the part.

Clark Gable and Elizabeth Taylor. Vivienne Leigh might have turned out to have a longer career if not for her mental illness.
