The two battle scenes around Orleans in "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" are the most realistic-feeling medieval battle scenes I know. The feeling of savagery, the realistic treatment of the result of medieval warfare, and the general feeling of fury and chaos made the battle scenes in this movie seem more realistic than any other. Also, the attitudes of the knights and soldiers really made it feel like this was what these people did for a living. They fought with fury, but also with professionalism. The risk of death, the horror of war, was all a part of day-to-day existance. And between battles, they had a realtionship with the opposing forces that really felt like what folks facing each other accross battle lines would have.
"Fall of the Roman Empire" has one of the biggest battle scenes ever filmed, and one can actually see the strategy in the ebb and flow of the battle.
"Waterloo" with Rod Steiger and King Vidor's "War & Peacc" show Napoleonic warfare at its glorious best, with men in fancy uniforms fighting with a grand strategy, tearing each other to pieces.
"Gettysburg" has the most intense, nail-biting Civil War battle scene in the attack on Little Round Top. It's depiction of Pickett's charge also shows how inevitable Lee's defeat was.
