What do think of the movie, "Into the Wild?"?!

Question: What did you think of the movie, "Into the Wild"?
Question Details: I don't know why some people say bad things about the young man; he set out for an adventure and learning experience that ended tragically. Like he wrote in his notes, he was trapped, starving, and weak.

I now feel quite certain that he didn't plan to commit suicide or anything (He quotes Thoreau, who has a book called "Walden's Pond," where the author spends 2 years living sort of in the wild and writes about it) but McCandless gives away over 20,000 in charity, which makes you think he was ending it all. But he sets out for his trip and lives simply long before he passes away.

His Alaska stay was just a major part of his trip, where small mistakes could lead to fatal circumstances. McCandless was quite young and a tad unscrupulous, but very idealistic and brave--which I greatly admire. He died, tragically (according to the movie), after he discovered that no one is perfect and he could live with that just as pure and happy as he was in a less mentally hectic environment.

Saw it this past weekend, LOVED IT!!!!
been waiting a loooong time for the movie, and it was worth it.
He had no plan to end it all, it was an "accidental suicide" lol. Even though a mile form where he was trying to cross the river there was a hand trolley, for just such an occasion. He was oblivious to this. He was actually closer to help then you are led to believe. A series of bad decisions led to his eventual death. Same could be said about a lot of people who meet an early end. He was not a hero, nor was he an idiot. He was simply a man on a mission.

I agree with you. I loved both the movie and the book, they really touched my heart. You should read the book to get further insight.

Side note: The soundtrack by Eddy Vedder is amazing.

I read the book years ago. The movie could have used some editing but did a great job at sticking with the book.

The kid was spoiled, immature, arrogant. But he was very young and also had alot of very good ideas and a sense of adventure that is lacking in most people.

I've spent a lifetime in high risk sports and seeking adventure and me and all my friends would have to admit that we are just lucky not to make that fatal mistake. This is the risk we take. We luckily survived our arrogance and learned to approach the risks we love with respect.

If he lived I think he would have learned the same lessons and grown to be a great person.
