Can a title ruin a movie?!

Question: I just watched 'A Mighty Heart' starring Angelina Jolie, about the kidnapping and execution of Daniel Perl. Wonderful film, great performances, heartbreaking subject matter but the title makes it sound like a made for tv movie starring Melissa Gilbert! Thoughts?????

I fully agree with that! A positively major, incredible movie can be headed for the theaters and... What's the name? It was some guy's name I think. Wasn't it?

I hear and say that a lot because the titles are so completely forgettable. Or, they name it something that's been used several times before. "Premonition" is one of the biggest culprits, with at least three recent films taking that name.

How difficult is it to come up with a catchy title? If they can write a screenplay, they can think of a name that people will remember or at least connect with a movie!

"A Mighty Heart" does sound like one of those Lifetime movies with someone like Melissa Gilbert or Sela Ward.

Someone disagrees about "ruin", but how about these movies that still battle for an audience: Pumpkinhead, Curse of the Cat People, I Married a Monster from Outer Space, and I Walked With a Zombie? You still have to coax people into watching these remarkable movies. Some catch on in spite of their titles, but, think about this: I've seen too many people ask for titles here because they want to buy the DVD yet can't think of the name. That can mean sales are hurt unless people want to go through the DVDs and read a paragraph on the back. Or, how about suggesting the film to a friend? How do you do that if you don't even remember the title? Personally, I think giving a movie a person's name is stupid! Unless it's a really famous one or has a catchy sound, there's nothing to give a signal to a filmgoer. A lot can be said in one word though: Ghost, Alien, Aliens, Saw, Jaws, etc.

WELL..........sometimes the title has NOTHING to do with the film!!! But I usually judge a film by it's name....SOMETIMES. I have seen movies that the title ruined it.

I dont think a title can ruin a movie. I feel it is very easy for a title to mislead audiences about what the movie is about, but not ruin. Upon watching it, you either like it or you dont, no matter what the title is. The only trouble would be if a title deterred someone from seeing it because it misled them, so in that case I guess it can potentially ruin a film. Sometimes movies are mistitled when their is probably a more fitting or appropriate title that could be used.
I agree that "A Mighty Heart" does sound like a made-for-TV movie, but I think their are lots of movies titles like that. For that movie particular, the title is the same as the memoir book actually written by Mariane Pearl herself, so its title was not created especially for the film.

On the Simpsons, I think in the episode where the boys drive cross country, they are seen leaving the theater where "Naked Lunch" is showing.

Nelson says, "I can think of two things wrong with that title."

A bad title can certainly put me off and cause me not to watch a film.

"snakes on a plane" thats all i have to say lol

It cant ruin the movie, but it can make people not want to watch it. Example could be Lord of the Rings. The name sounded kinda stupid but the movie was exellent
