Why was bogart considered such a good Philip marlowe?!
Question: when in the books Marlowe is 6ft tall and well built
Answers: when in the books Marlowe is 6ft tall and well built
he could deliver the one -liners well......and of course he is now regarded as an untouchable screen God......however there are several better portrayals...not least robert mitchum......and of course the "Falcon" series
The others were no good
Bogart has class whatever part he played
well just because he was but was the guy in the book a good actor?
Because he so epitomized the hard-boiled detective character. His features made him look like a man who had lost a long battle with the world, but he carried himself with an air of a man who couldn't be beaten, even when he was getting the tar kicked out of him. That's why he was so effective as both Spade and Marlowe. His physical divergence from the written character doesn't change the fact that he was the best personification of him (No disrespect to Mitchum).
Bogey had it all, it's a bit like trying to play Long John Silver after people have seen Robert Newton playing the part, They are all pale imitations of the real thing.
