The general theory surrounding Samara is that she had evil/magic powers and was thrown into a well by her mum. The "ring" is the light shining through the blocked up well. Emily Rose was a girl who was possessed by a demon in college. She died as a result of her exorcism and the movie follows the criminal trial of those involved with her exorcism.
