It really is a pretty crappy film, and its really long, and after all that THE DEVIL DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER TO APPEAR.
But I seem to have some kind of desire to see it again anyway. Shall I bother?

Sadly I did. What a load of old tosh!!!
I assume that it comes from a book that I haven't read, but it does seem that there is the makings of a potentially good movie in the story. Unfortunately, it seems to have been ruined by a very lack-lustre screenplay, and poor direction.
That being said, there weren't many alternatives on the other channels!

No. There are a lot better movies to watch, of similar genre, director or star.
Polanski has done some great creepy and supernatural thrillers, which you can rent or download ... Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant, Repulsion.
Depp of course has done stellar work, especially in Tiim Burton movies: Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow. Also with other directors in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas amidst others.
Supernatural creepers: Exorcist, Carrie, Sixth Sense.
There's better out there.

Watch it until you get bored and then change the channel.
Ugh! I paid money to see this in the theatre. I thought it was very good ... until the last 15 minutes and it completely unraveled into a state of utter ridiculousness. It was like eating a nice meal and getting to the last bite of your creme brulee, you find a pubic hair.
That said, I would probably watch it. Just to see if it the ending was as bad as I remember.
