The gorefests practically have replaced true horror.

Also, you may have desensitized yourself to scares. By watching more and more, you actually reduce their effects on you. That's why people want more and more violence in videogames; more and more car crashes and shootouts in movies and on TV; more people being carved up, either in autopsies or repulsive TV series and movies. Only, it's become complete overkill in the movies.

Go back and watch relatively mild horror films. Allow yourself to REALLY watch them, appreciating what they do with shadows and sugggestions. I guess this will depend on if you want to be more of a film buff than a casual viewer. Also, it helps to switch off the cynic part, that part of you that thinks, "AAAAAAH! I know what's going to happen!" Allow yourself to be taken in by the film. Have some fun with them while getting reacquainted with films ranging from "The Haunting" (both versions but first is best) to "Halloween" (original), from "Psycho" (original) to "Phantasm", from "Fiend Without a Face" to "The Fog" (original). Return to some of the roots of horror.

I've made an oath not to watch movies that rely on butchery; I don't want those images in my mind anymore. I'm rewatching lots of older ones: "Carnival of Souls", "Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell" (Japan 1968), "The Gorgon", "Night of the Demon" aka "Curse of the Demon", "The Frighteners", "The Haunting" (the original), "Race With the Devil", "Bone Snatcher", and "Creepshow 2".

Or, go for the really historical stuff, films you likely never considered:
Phantom of the Opera with Lon Chaney, Sr.
Dracula with Bela Lugosi
The Invisible Man with Claude Rains
Frankenstein with Boris Karloff
The Bride of Frankenstein
Son of Frankenstein (which inspired so many scenes in "Young Frankenstein")
Mad Love with Peter Lorre
Beast with Five Fingers
I Walked with a Zombie
Cat People
Curse of the Cat People
The Seventh Victim
Leopard Man

You shouldn't...you're in no real danger...it's just a movie.

OK so I dont find those movies scary either, you pretty much know when the scary parts are going to happen. I find movies like 1408 to be scary, the movies that kinda get in your mind a little, I think those ones are scarier, movies where you look back and say "damn that was f*cked up"

I would have to recommend Excorcism of Emily Rose...its not a "boo" aghh! Scary, but definately scary in a different way cuz it is based on a true story. I couldn't believe it was only rated pg-13, I was 19 yrs. old in the movie theatre CRYING and almost had to get up and leave cuz I was so scared! I missed half the movie cuz my ears and eyes were both closed tight! Good luck, hope this helped :D

I feel the same way, I almost think that movies were made alot better then. the scary movies now dont do nothing for me but I did watch room 1408 and it did trip me out

So many "scary" movies nowadays, count on gore to delivery a scare or suspense, instead of depending more on dramatic elements, plot, and mood. I've seen Saw and didn't think it was scary at all...disturbing? Yeah, but not scary. I was actually more freaked out by "Hellraiser" and that's from the 80s.

Try watching a movie called Wolf Creek....it's scary because it could actually happen, in fact it is based on a true story.

The best "scary" movies are the ones made in the "golden era" of movie making where it wasn't what you saw that sacred you but what you didn't see.
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and the Birds are classic examples. Going more contemporary, I think the original Friday the 13th has it's moments.
If you want to be really scared, watch the first 15 minutes of When Stranger Calls (the original NOT the remake) [1979]

For me !! i don't get scared while am watching with my friends or .. the light is ON !!
i get scared when no1 in the house but me and (ALONE BY MY OWN)
and the lights are OFF ..
maybe you can try this ..
if it u didn't get scared .. DUDE u r unbelievabell .. and one of a kind (LOL)

watch "the changeling" by yourself at night. lights off of course. it's the only movie that truly scared me.
