I think he died of the Plague. In the part when they ask him what his qualifications are to scare people, he mentions something about living during the times of the Black Death and having a pretty fun time doing that.

I don't know. It could've been hypothermia or something cause he was very pale. But Link might be right. I remember him saying something about the times of Black Death being around and he was alive then.
