Chinatown ( the movie ) what happened?!
Question: I watched Chinatown last night and frankly I think I missed a few details in the story. Jack Nicholson is a detective hired by the supposed wife of Mulray to confirm whether or not Mulray is cheating on his wife. Nicholson catches Mulray kissing a teenage girl who turns out to be Mulray's stepdaughter.
Was Mulray sexually involved with the stepdaughter as revenge for his wife's incestual affair with her father? or am I interpreting the story line wrong?

I don't think Mulwray has any sexual involvement with his step-daughter. Katherine was kept a secret because Evelyn didn't want her daughter to be hurt by Noah Cross.
Evelyn tells JJ she has had affairs in the past, and I'm pretty sure Hollis knew about some of them. There would be no reason for him to get revenge on his wife for Katherine if he knew about her other relationships.
I also do not think it is totally clear whether Evelyn was raped or if she had agreed to the relationship with Noah. When JJ slaps her and asks, she only asks if he understands, and never gives a straight-forward answer.
