They used cgi in the original 3 films, however it was primitave compared to today. An example from 'A new hope' is the cgi death-star that the rebels use to explain their plan of attack. Same for Return of the Jedi.
George Lucas explained this in an interview made since the final 3 films were released. He was defending the use of CGI in the new movies and said "Even the first 3 movies used cgi"
Star Wars used a very.. light sense of CGI at the time.
but if you want to see a movie that came out at the same time but was 100% (shot on a black Background) CGI
watch TRON.
that was a modern marvel in itself.
