Actually I read an interview with Quentin Tarentino about this very subject. He originally wanted it to be gold bars but he couldn't get any made by the prop department in time. So he decided at the last minute to just leave it a mystery. The idea of a soul didn't come to him until after the movie was released. He uses the 666 in all of his movies.
