The point was to teach both the Charles and the blind man that they needed to take charge of their lives. Charles needed to take a step up and stick to his morals, even if it meant getting expelled. The old guy needed to realize that he couldn't take the easy way out/ the coward's way out and kill himself. It would have been easy had they both accepted their fates, but they had courage in overcoming their fears. Charles' fear was the fear of man and the blind guy's fear was in living his life blind.

Integrity. The young man would not be a 'Rat' and tell on his rich friends.

Maybe one has to be French, Italian or Spanish to appreciate this kind of movie...
