He was popular in the US but not exceptionally so in comparison with other comedians who were contemporary with him. However , he was always very popular in France and I suspecct , Jacquot, that you have the `French` taste for comedy and the approach to it. Benny Hill was another ànglo comedian popular in France, I remember seeing him on TV frequently when I lived there years ago
You people??? Who do you think you're speaking to here...a band of idiots? Has it ever entered your closed little mind that it may be because they do not perceive him as such! Jerry Lewis deserves much credit for his brand of humor but not for its genius. Had he not accidentally bumped into Dean Martin on that fateful day, he'd still be rebuilding the Catskill Mountains! Everything he has and everything he has ever had came from that comedy team. That, my friend, was genius unintended! It opened doors for him that would not have opened otherwise. Jerry Lewis is only as good as his straight man and Dean was the best. Had it failed to register that all Jerry did after that was make movies which only played to certain audiences and really sink his teeth into the M.D.A. Telethons? Sure he played Vegas and a few other night spots and his contributions should be well noted but genius? I think not!
You're trying to be funny but the reason the French so adored Jerry Lewis has less to do with his comedy (though naturally they did find him humorous) and more with the reception he received from influential French film scholars in the early 60s who recognized Lewis as a director fitting into the mold of "the Auteur"-- meaning that he was a director who left distinguishable artistic marks on the films he directed.
