For one, it's an excellently made movie and, in my opinion, some of Jack Nicholson's greatest work. He plays crazy very, very well. I personally did find The Shining to be fairly scary, just imagine being the mother or son in that situation. It has many of the elements that make up a good horror film, especially suspense. Also, I've come to believe that true horror, as displayed in the best horror films, invokes more of the psychological aspect of what's scary, not the physical or painful element of what's more disturbing than it is scary.

Let me tell you in two words. Jack Nicholson!

The most frightening scene is what your own mind can create, not what what some director puts on film. The most disturbing films are known more for what was insinuated, not shown.

Well Buddy, if your a fan of good ol' Mr. King and Kubrick then things kinda seem to fall into place, plus that creepy scene where the clown gives a guy a ******* ewwwww...

Creepy yeah. Scary when Jack grabs the ax but the ending wasn't. I'm more of a fan of the mini-series because I love the book and that's closer to the book. The woman in 217 is.... very scary.

its not a horror movie, more of suspense. if you can forget all glamor and gore of today's "horror movies" you will notice the have no storyline. the shining is a classic, and actually tells a STORY. it is scary, just not in the typical "the hill have eyes" or "Saw" kind of way.

You know I love Nicholson, and I LOVE Kubrick, but I thought thye movie fell a little short, especially the ending. I liked the movie don't get me wrong, and i think it was more on Kubrick's part rather than Jack because he was great, like another guy said, it wasn't really to close the book and I expect more from Kubrick.............sorry guys. I still will always love Kubrick though
