Considering Trainspotting and Requiem For A Dream are coincidently two of my favorite movies I find "drug films" to be very advantagous to the development of the film industry. Drug films show the gritty side of life, and in many instances they show real life. There is often more truth and more lessons to be learned from films such as drug films than from basic doctrine of morality. I feel like drug films get a bad reputation and many people see the films as glorifying the drug, giving sympathy to the junkie or dealer. I have to strongly disagree. Yes, there is sympathy but No, they do not glorify the drug. In Trainspotting, Renton is unable to live a fruitful life until he leaves his "so called-mates" and he gives up heroin. As for Requiem For A Dream- it is obvious when you finish this film that drugs are not glorfied. Addiction is destructive, as you see with not only Harry but also everyone else in his life. Yes there is sympathy for Harry and Renton, but the sympathy is there because of thier struggle with their decisions, not their struggle with drugs (if you an see the difference between the two)

when people see and comprehend the actual consequences of the drug use from watching a movie then it can be a good thing but when it just seems to glorify the drug use in the movie and maybe even cause people to feel sorry for the pusher or user then it may not be so good, my sister watched blow and it was based on a true story, the life of George Jung and she felt sorry for him and felt like he just had some hard breaks, i tried to explain to her that that's the consequences of his actions, and he had so many chances throughout movie and still never learned his lesson and ended up losing everything including his daughter and is spending the majority of his life in prison now. so i feel as long as the person watching the film is mature enough to understand that it should be a lesson learned then yes, it's good to let them watch it, but if they are going to end up thinking that it was cool or feeling sorry for the character in the movie then it could be a problem.

I think they are good, but really they are more of films for adults. The people that really need the influence not to do drugs and to see the reality probably aren't watching these movies.

I definately think that the films you mention told a story that I'm glad is out there, so therefore have a place.

The films showed the dirty side of drugs, not the sexy, glammed up side that so many people see. I mean, lets face it, heavy drug users are anything but sexy?
it definately isn't an apealing lifestyle.....well, not to me anyway.

But, the question was how important are they..well, they're definately more important, and have a bit more meaning than the latest romcom or slasher flick, though generaly, because of the subject matter, not as popular as the aforementioned genres. We do after all (well, most of us) watch a movie to escape from reality, not to have it shoved in our faces.

i dont think any "genre" of film is more important than any other, however, having said that, i do think that a certain film can be important, and if the drug movie is good, than it can be important

I feel that drug films are no better than the after school specials we all grew up with. Everyone knows drugs are bad, so how is that entertaining? These movies are a complete waste of time and money preaching what all people know. If someone is on drugs or going to use drugs for recreational, these movies would not do anything to sway the viewers because they have probably already seen all this from their druggie friends.
