I downloaded a movie that is in AVI format, but my windows media player does not!

There are 2 methods to play it, either using Windows Media Player or installing the codec.
There are few programs that support AVI format video.
QuickTime Player (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download )
Winamp Player (http://www.winamp.com/player )
VideoLAN Client (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_... )
CyberLink PowerDVD (http://www.download.com/3000-2139_4-1076... )
The alternative method is by installing the codec application.
Codec is a small piece of program that plugs into your computer's operating system and allows the software installed on your computer to perform the "decoding" for the video that has been "coded" with the codec you installed.
(ie. most DVD videos need DivX codec to open)
I recommended FFDSHOW. It is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing several video formats, including DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movies.

quicktime works with AVI i'm pretty sure
vlc media player plays almost everything
no codecs needed
maybe you can convert it online into mpg or something like that
google search avi to video file converter and download a free trial to convert it or just look for a player that supports it ^.^"
get a k-lite codec pack... won't cost you anything, just search with google or something
I had the same problem and I downloaded BS player is very good it can play anything and it's completely free
