He couldn't feel love for the beautiful things in life, so he preserved them on film, and by doing so, hid himself behind the lens. He recorded life instead of living it. When he met the girl next door, who made him feel love for something beutiful (on his own terms, not someone else's), he finally put down the camera (emphasized by the scene where she tells him to stop filming and he snaps the viewfinder closed).
Because he wanted to record everything beautiful in the world! And he's weird...
he filmed what he thought was beautiful and what was normal everyday life to everyone else. he showed it to that girl and loved her because she was the only one who understood where he was coming from.
Ricky liked to film things that created emotions that meant something to him. Most of what he filmed were things that everyday people would overlook. He felt he was able to bring out beauty in everything from death and sadness to the girl next door.
