Were Americans offended by Borat?!

Question: Borat had me in stitches. As a Brit I sometimes find American humour a bit strange as I'm sure they do ours. However on watching Borat - it got me wondering whether Americans were offended to be shown as half-wits even when they were trying their hardest to be helpful and polite.

This stems from a particular stereotype that I've never really understood about my country. I understand that British and American humor is different. However, because a lot of British humor appears to be self depreciating, that doesn't mean that American humor can't, or doesn't appreciate the same type of humor.

Borat made Americans looks bad, but I think it also made us look good as well. I'm assuming a lot of non-Americans saw the movie, and came away with the notion that we were made out to look like a bunch of asses. I came away with it, as an American, and felt that we were portrayed as a helpful and polite country, albeit perhaps not terribly knowledgeable at times.

And above all else, the movie was hilarious, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! We can, and do laugh at ourselves, contrary to popular belief. :)

i dont care who got offended by borat.he made me laugh like crazy.and thats all that matters.heck they should make borat 2

Borat is hysterical

Funny like Jackass

haha i would like to no to, i found it funny but maybe a bit much in places.

I'm not American, but Ithink that they have a very strange sense o humour, I did't find Borat funny, but sth more than stupid!

i havent seen it! i really want to but yeah ive heard its offensive. should i watch it?? is it really that great i heard its a bit reptitive?? alot of american comeedy make fun of othr countried anyway so what does it matter theres always going to be a movie that will offend someone lol

Sacha Baron Cohen is nuts...no matter what movie/show he is in. I liked him better in "Talladaga Nights", but can watch him in anything and laugh for hours

I didn't see it that way. I just thought the particular people who were targeted were funny in their own (sometimes stupid) way. The scene at the rodeo, or those guys on the bus - I can see how that makes Americans look bad. But honestly, being American, I wasn't offended. I just saw those particular people for the losers they are. That movie was freaking funny.

If you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?

The only people offended by Borat were the bigots who got exposed by the hi jinks in the movie, or perhaps the bigots watching the movie in the audience.

All the Americans I've talked to think it's funny or don't understand it.

Ali G Show plays on HBO here, and people who "got it" didn't like the movie as much but it was way better than the Ali G Movie.

He can't top getting a Tucson crowd to sing "throw the Jew down the well".

No way! We loved Borat. The only people that were offended were the women's group he filmed in the movie. But what else would you expect from those man-haters? Borat was an awsome character. Fun-ny!!!

Why should they be offended when a very great number of them is coming from the same more or less background and mentality .
In fact they should find themselves depicted in the pictures at some point or other.
