Who would have been a better Gandalf?!

Question: Me and my friend were having a nerdy discussion about the Lord of the Rings films. We agreed that Ian McKellen was a rubbish Gandalf (too wiry and big-nosed for me, and not WISE enough) but we couldn't decide who would have been the best choice. Who WOULD have been the best choice? Des Lynam?

Peter O'Toole. He speaks with a tone which makes everything seem very poignant and profound, just watch his performance in Super girl, even with its dire script he manages to make everything he says as if they came from the pen of a Oscar winning script writer. Also he has a certain spikiness to him as if he's vast knowledge and wise thoughts have unsettled him to a point. You can image him looking down upon Frodo putting the fear of life into the young whipper snapper with his panicked eyes. Genius's always tend to be troubled and there is no doubt Peter O'Toole is long way past troubled.

sean connery

Patrick Stewart

I think Ian Mckellen did a great job, remember he is not meant to be just old and wise, but powerful and strong.

Edit: But yes he does have one gargantuan nose!

I thought he was a very good Gandalf, but an extremely poor Dumbledore! He didn't seem happy at all and in the books Dumbledore beams at everyone...he also didn't seem as clever and witty as he is in the book.

i named my triplets after lord of the rings characters! hooray!

lol as somewhat of a huge lord of the rings fan.. having seen the movies and read the books.

I'm reading them to my babies in the hospital. and i can imagine that there would have been a better gandalf!

ian mckellen captured my imagination and i did shed a tear when he fell.... i missed him but thankfully he wasn't dead!

Eric Porter would have made a wonderful Gandalf. Sadly he died in 1995.

I wanna tug his beard and touch his magic staff. :D

i thought he was a great gandalf

and as for cloud zero's answers ian mckellen did not play dumbledore that was richard harris who sadly passed away after making the second harry potter movie he would also have been a great choice to play gandalf

Peter Griffin - he totalled that chicken
