The opening scene of Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan finds us in an American military Cemetery in present-day Normandy, France. An older Ryan, accompanied by his family, searches for one particular grave -- Captain John Miller. When he finds it he's overcome with emotion and his memory sweeps back in time to D-Day, the Sixth of June 1944.

Ryan's three brother's die. The order says go get Ryan since he is the only brother alive.
Lots of people get shot.
One guy shouts "My Liver."

Tom Hanks whispers and no one understands him.
An old man cries.

To me, Saving Private Ryan, is a statement of the personal sacrifice, horror, and devastation of war.

I don't think the overall storyline was important. I think the individual events were. Letting the enemy go, then what it caused later. Following seemingly heartless rules and regs like taking that kid, only to find out that there was a good reason for it. I don't think the story Ryan himself or getting him back to his mother was important.

I realize this doesn't answer your question directly, but it seems to be one of those movies you kinda experience for what it tries to capture about war, the military, etc.

you should just watch it.
its a great movie.
