The Ending of The Mist? What happened?!

Question: All the reviews say The Mist has a great ending, but I don't want to sit in the cinema for two hours to get to it.

So, anyone want to give me a summary? Was it Harry Potter?
No, really, what happened?
Thanks

There is a lot that happens in the movie that adds to the impact of the ending. I can give you a summary of the last 20 minutes of the movie but it won't mean much if you haven't taken in everything.
The movie opens with violent storm of the shore of Maine as a man sits in his studio painting one of many pieces of work. He paints movie posters for a living and on his wall are all his works (everyone of them is a poster from a stephen king novel). As the storm gets more violent the man takes his family into the basement just as a tree crashes through the living room window destroying his studio.
--The next morning they go out to assess the damage noting they are going to need a lot of supplies until they get power back. As they say this they see over the water a mist coming down from the mountains and how odd it is.
--The dad takes his son into town and the mom stays behind to clean up. As they drive they note a large caravan of soldiers speeding by.
--When they get to town most of the community is at the market stocking up on supplies. Talking about the craziness of the storm and the comotion it caused.
--Suddently an older man comes running into the store bloody and disordered rambling about his friend getting snatched up in the mist. The entire market is paying attention as the mist rolls over the little shopping center really fast and screams can be heard in the distance.
--They shut the doors to the front of the store as people start speculating what's going on. People start to get a little panicked, especially one woman in particular who starts going on about the end of days and god's wrath.
--One young mother claims desperately that she needs to get home to her children and begs someone to escort her home. Everyone looks down in shame as no one steps up, she shakes her head teary eyed and walks into the fog by herself.
--Gradually as the movie moves along, tensions strain as more and more people start to die at the hands of strange and unfamiliar creatures. All the while the crazy lady gets more and more adimant about God's wrath and the call for blood.
--Eventually she starts gathering support and whips everyone into a frenzy until everyone is split into two groups. The crazy ladies side and a smaller group consisting of the dad, his son, a pretty blonde, a frisky older woman, a stock boy, and the old guy with the bloody nose from earlier.
--It begins to become clear that the smaller group is in just as much danger from the crazy ladies group inside as the monsters outside.
---SPOILER-- Do not read if you don't want to know!!
OHH you missed a great ending!! Don't mean to rub it in.
The crazy lady loses her sh** and rally's the other people into a frenzy.
-- She starts going on again about sacrifice and a demand for blood. She demands the dad hand over his son as she and others surround them armed with knives. She starts yelling and screaming and going nuts when Oliver (bag man)shoots her twice, once in the gut then finally in the head. I know it sounds bad but by the time the scene came around the audience was so sick of her the entire theater erupted in applause.
--As everyone looks at her dead body in shock the dad takes his son and a few others and make a break for the door.
--Eight of them make for the dad's land cruiser but only five of them make it, you get a few more looks at some of the monsters as they take out the other three(yeesh).
--They make their way through the fog in the land cruiser, they being the Dad, his son, pretty blond lady, old lady, and the guy with the bloody nose who ran into the market as the fog rolled in.
--Anyway he drives them back to his house because he promised his son they would look for his mom, they find her dead, webbed up in front of the house, apparantly trying to fix the broken window from the fallen tree(she looked peacefull) but it was sad.
--The Dad sucks it up and declairs they will go as far as the gas will take them. They pass car after car hidden in the mist each turned over or filled with dead webbed up people.
--When the gas runs out they are in the middle of nowhere and the sounds of the monsters can be heard all around in the distance, low at first but steadily getting closer.
--The dad takes out the gun seeming like he's going to defend everyone, but steadily, quietly they all look at the gun then at each other, they nod in silent agreement. the dad checks the chamber and notes there are only four bullets. The pretty blonde notes there are five of them. The dad looks at his sleeping son and says "I'll figure something out"
--The camera pans back out of the car and four shots ring out, muzzle flashes seen through the windows. The dad stumbles out of the car devistated and streaked with blood spatter, half screaming half weaping. Having just killed his son and his wife dead he peers teary eyed into the mist. He hears roaring and screeching getting closer and starts to yell "Come on!" "Come get me!"over and over again as the sounds get louder, slowly it gets closer but nothings visible(really tense moment.)
--Slowly a tank creeps out of the mist with soldiers in gas masks on either flank, followed by a convoy of more tanks and soldiers with flame throwers. In their wake the mist is thinning and soliders are burning one monster after another while trucks pass by carrying survivors.
--The young mother with short hair who pleaded for someone to help her get home to her kids in the beginning of the movie rolls by on one of the truck with her kids, she stares at him blankly as they roll by. The dad takes all this in and loses it, he falls to his knees and screams his head off as two soldiers stand over him silently taking in what he had done.
--If he'd waited just a few moments longer they all would have made it. FADE OUT

Drayton, Billy, Amanda, and one other survivor escape to Drayton's car and leave Bridgton. Learning that the Mist has spread ahead of them across all of Maine, they prepare to drive on into an uncertain future. (Most people die because of the creatures such as the ones with the tentacles but the main character escapes).
