Question on meaning of phrase?!

Question: What exactly does the following mean?:

"Alfred Hitchcock always said that suspense is preferable to surprise, but in this story, the surprise is integral to the suspense. Koepp, an often ingenious writer, should have followed King's example and covered his tracks better. If he had, "Secret Window" might have been as good as "Stir of Echoes," and not simply a mini "Misery" and a not-quite "Shining.""

This was mentioned in a review for "Secret Window" written by Michael Wilmington. Heres a link for the full article http://chicago.metromix.com/movies/revie...

ok.

Alfred Hitchcock was the master of suspense, saying that suspense ((keeping viewers on the edge of their seats, waiting for something to happen)) is better than surprise ((throwing random things in the movies to shock viewers)). In Secret Window knowing theres a surprise at the end adds to the suspense in the movie. David Koepp ((screenplay writer of both Secret Window and Stir of Echoes)) should have followed Stephen King's example with the secret window ((he was the one that wrote the book that insipred the movie)). Had he covered his tracks better and stuck more to King's story in the book, Secret Window may have been as good as Stir Of Echoes instead of just something similar to Misery ((written by Stephen King)) and an-ALMOST Shining.

basically. Secret Window could've been as good as Stir of Echoes, or The Shining had he Koepp written the screenplay better. Instead it was merely a mini-Misery.

There were too many obvious clues that tipped the conclusion long before it arrived
