Why is everyone making a big deal about The Golden Compass?!

Question: I don't understand why everyone is boycotting this movie and making a huge controversy over a film. Yes, the book was written by an atheist. Who cares? Yes, in the film good is protrayed as evil and evil as good. Who cares? It's just fiction. I also understand that in the end of the series of books, that the characters end up defeating good gone bad or so called "God" Again, it's just a fictional story made for entertainment only, not Anti-Christianity for young kids. I will admit that I have not read the books so I don't have a true solid option. If you have read the books, give me some insight on your options... Thanks.

The series "His Dark Materials" by Phillip Pulman (sp?) is three books long...The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass

The series, admitted by the author, is "anti-christian" but the film is supposed to have removed most of these themes. I'm not really sure how that's possible since the series culminates in a war against God, but whatever.

IMO the books aren't necessarily anti-god or anti-christian they are more against a spanish-inquisition-like christian authority being in power (in the books the "magesterium" holds a lot of influence and power in the world).

The ueber christians of the world are screaming because they think that their children will turn away from religion if they see this movie (because they're ignorant..sorry but it's true--if you think reading fictional book series like harry potter or his dark materials is going to send you to hell you need a reality check).

The movie is supposed to be kid-oriented and i'm sure younger children will enjoy the scope and range of the colorful characters, but there are very adult themes regarding original sin and coming of age/puberty so you might want to screen it first before you take a kid younger than 13.

Bcoz dey loved d book??

cuz in the books, they kill god, which makes some religious people think that thats not something they want to explain to their kids after the movies over

Personally, I can't wait to see it. Then again, I'm not insecure about my faith. :)

It's nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the thing is the book was made into a film in a country that actually was not really aware of the base line of thought from the author............he is not only an anti religion but feels that have an religious base is wrong........personally feel that he is trying to down play it for the USA audience and sort of sneak it in.

I have read the books and whilst not a raving bible thumper in any way was more than uncomfortable with the lines being drawn.

regards

Just had a conversation with someone about this over the weekend.

Many people (mostly Christians) believe it's about anti-God and they don't want subliminal messages about anti-God in their kids head. They also think it confused the line between good and evil so kids can't easily understand the difference. The whole series was to be the anti-Chronicles of Narnia.

Personally, it looked like a cute movie so I am going to see it anyhow. It's entertainment and not ment to be worshiped.

I personally don't get it. It is just a story. If the "religious"folks don't like it...don't go see it. No big deal. No need to get all bent out of shape over it.

because the books are amazing!!!!! tho it may be fiction but it opens up your mind man it gets you to think about things in a perspective that the world may not be as it seems and that maybe there are different worlds and stuff and things that we dont know about. and the best bit is that its not scared by christianity!
