Why do US movies look more "glossier" than UK ones?!

Question: Just a question. I'd like to know why do US movies always look more colourful or "glossy" than UK movies? I find many UK movies look plain and washed out, almost TV looking, whereas the US movies of all budgets look colourful, well-lit and distinct.

The actors look more attractive & healthy, action is more exciting and camerawork moves and flows more. I know America has been been making movies for over 70 years and have the studio system.

How can we apply those principles in the UK? Do we need better stage-lighting or production values or make-up or simply spend more in post-production?

Or is it just bigger budgets?

Bigger budgets - the UK film industry is in decline, our budgets are getting smaller and smaller.

Good quality 35 mm film is extremely expensive so in an effort to save money British filmmakers use a much cheaper variety and spend less money on cinematography and proper lighting. We tend to focus more on producing smaller, quirkier movies - e.g. lock stock and two smokey barrels, trainspotting. We just don't have the luxury of spending money on getting that glossy finish.

In the past we use to produce some very good movies like Lawrence of Arabia but that was long time ago, making movies has gotten considerably more expensive since then and our studio system has been in decline for a long time, we just don't have enough investors willing to take a chance with their cash and competing with the American blockbusters has become next to impossible. The only way to make a profit is to concentrate on making small films with good storylines, which rarely happens.

because they spend more money.

more money going into US films?

Americans are big on looks....The Hollywood set tend to be very beautiful people...

Maybe US producers shoot to film rather than cheaper video here in the UK

Bigger budgets is probably the biggest part of it. They can afford to film a scene costing billions a shot, and do it several times.

Also, American films tend to go overboard on flashy effects, while English films tend to take a more ultra-real approach. It's never really been the English way to make a "WOW!" film (with the possible exception of James Bond).

The sun shines more here.
