Shawshank Redemtion?!

Question: Is it just me that finds it odd that given the films basic message (hope will set you free), Morgan Freeman's character is only released when he loses any hope of getting out?

Parole Boards are there to assess a prisoners rehabilitation achievements and further possible risk to the community following release. He was eventually let go near the end because they recognised that, after years of superficially parrotting the same old lines about how reformed he was and how much he had learnt in prison etc., he was finally being honest. It was not hope that set him free but the truth.

gud point.

I did find that odd too but at the same time, to me it shows how the criminal justice system is. For some reason, they tend to think you are reformed once you begin to seem the complete opposite.

No. You have brought up a good point. Keep it coming. lol.

Totally agree, good film overall though

GOOD OBSERVATION

it`s an American flik.... . your not supposed to think... . did you know that during Independence Day when the Aliens got whipped, during the original screening the audience where all shouting U.S.A. U.S.A... .

No, he was just slow in telling them what they wanted to hear.

i felt the lesson was never give up hope, like you said he gave up and it all came good, but what an engrossing superb film, once you care what happens to the characters its good.

All i know is its one of the best films ever made.Ive seen it like 4 times allready the first time on dvd then it gets shown on national tv some years and i watch it every time.

I think the movies message is about change.Morgans character in the movie is in jail for murder and before andy(tim robbins) dufrain arrives he doesnt give a damn about anything anymore.Slowly they build a friendship and any shows him that things can change if you put your mind to it.

At the end at the interview for his release when he makes the speech. he has learned so much from andy about change and making things happen by using your brain that it changes him and makes him into an honest man.

Thats kind of what i think but its a great story

FORGET EVERYTHING THIS IS THE BEST PICTURE EVER, EVER, EVER ,MADE

i think you missed the point of that scene and the point of the message "hope can set you free" that line had nothing to do with the prison it was talking about hope can set you free from yourself and your own emotional baggage and freeman's (Red's) mono log in that scene , that i think was more direct to the audience than to the parole board , was about telling us that he , in his own mind , was a free man in or out of prison and that's what his friend Andy had taught him.
