Can anyone tell me if this was him or a name and persona he made up?!
Question: in Fight Club, one of my alltime favorites, the main character Edward Norton keeps referring to Brad Pitt as TYler Durden...he states he met him on a plane and they become friends...Now we all know by now that they were the same person but did he make up that persona and take over the identity or was that always his name... it seems odd that if his name was TYler Durden from birth that he would of not known he was imagining him..... everything indicates that he made up the name and took over but wanted to get your view

This is my all time favorite movie. Tyler is an aspect of the Narrator's( edward Norton's character ) own split personality.
Although the narrator (Ed Norton) assumed many idenities. He assumed at least 3 diffrent idenities at the spport groups. Men remaining men. His testicular cancer group. his lymphoma monday night, "Seize The Day,his tuberculosis Friday night group, and his melanoma Monday night group.
He was asked by Marla Who are you? Cornelius? Rupert?Raveis? Or, any of those Any of the stupid name give each night? Tyer Durden was the split personality of Edward norton's charachter.
When he moved in with Tyler he found a bunch of readers digest book's written in the first person. I am Jack's Lungs without me jack could not take in oxygen to breathe. I am Jack's Prostate." So, when his boss was giving him a performance review at work he assumed the idenity of Jack. He says I am I Am Jack's Complete Lack of Surprise in his head. Then after boxes his own azz. I said to himself I am jack's revenge.
There was not a mention of his true idenity in the whole movie. I can not understand how if he and tyler were the same person, How could Tyler star 69 him to return the call to the payphne.
It was a persona. Much like someone with multiple personalities has a different name for each persona, the main character in fight club subconsciously invented another person, giving him a unique name and history.
