Is the Golden Compass movie anti-religon?!

Question: I'm Christan and I really want to see it. But when dad find out it's anti-religion, he said that we must not watch it. I really don't care if this movie's anti-religion. it's looks awesome, and sweet! I'm not really sure if the studio takes the anti-religon out. If they did, yay!

I've recently learned that if a movie or story supposedly has an atheistic or un-Christian undertone, it turns out to be some of the best entertainment.

Look at it this way, people were totally up-in-arms about Harry Potter being un-Christian because of "all the witchcraft". When I saw the first movie, all I could think was "these people obviously don't know what this story is about!". Besides, if the Harry Potter series was so un-Christian, why did they celebrate Christmas????

Now, The DaVinci Code was tricky. Yes, there were a few things in the movie/book that could be looked at as un-Christian and I can somewhat understand why so many Christian organizations were up-in-arms about it, but it was an incredible story!

People really just need to realize that these are FICTION works. Not to be taken literally.

Who cares if it's anti-religion? You're going to face a lot of things that are anti-religion in your life. If you're religious, there's no reason to let it bother you. If you really believe in your religion, is some film going to pose a threat? I doubt it.

This is true. It's written by an athiest man who is very much against the Narnia trilogy. As most people know, the Narnia stories are very Christian-oriented. I agree though, the movie looks really cool.

Here is something I found on his official site:

His Dark Materials seems to be against organised religion. Do you believe in God?

"I don't know whether there's a God or not. Nobody does, no matter what they say. I think it's perfectly possible to explain how the universe came about without bringing God into it, but I don't know everything, and there may well be a God somewhere, hiding away.

Actually, if he is keeping out of sight, it's because he's ashamed of his followers and all the cruelty and ignorance they're responsible for promoting in his name. If I were him, I'd want nothing to do with them."

It is ultimately atheistic, as the kids will kill God. Much of the atheist message has been removed, but if a movie is going to make you question your faith, perhaps your faith was not that strong to begin with

I'd say it's questionably anti-religious. That is, yes, it depicts a religious organisation as a primary antagonist.

That said, the religious organisation is far from as benign as the church of this world. In the Golden Compass, the Magisterium, as it is known, seeks to control the world and enforce its beliefs upon all intelligent beings, and to 'remove' anyone that gets in their way.

To be fair, this is similar to how the Catholic church acted during the dark ages in Europe and how fanatical extremists of any religions would probably act today (as seen in religious terrorism, eg. 11/Sept/2001), but if you'd defend that kind of religion then I'd have to question your sanity.

What I advise to you, is that you speak to your dad, let him know of the religious content of the movie and explain that despite that, it is just a movie - a work of fiction no less - and will in no way effect your or anyone's religious beliefs. After all, most people have the ability to see what is fictional (especially that which is presented as fictional) and what isn't.

Well it's not about whether or not the movie is pro or anti religion. it's about supporting the writer who is an atheist. paying to watch compass would mean you support the writer. just like passion of the christ. poeple didn't go out just to watch that movie but support movies like that.

The original book has some atheist ideas, the script for film has been changed in all that part.

However, I'm not christian (I respect them though) and I saw Narnia Chronicles, and I've read all the books.

IMPORTANT: I don't know why there should be a problem for christian people to watch that movie. It just makes appear that christianism stills existing just by avoiding the people listen other ideas, and supporting ignorance... If someone is really so christian, he shouldn't be so scared that a movie would be able to convince you (or anybody) of the opposite...
THAT JUST PROVE THAT CHRISTIANISM HASN'T CHANGED AT ALL AFTER ALL THAT TIME.

(tell that to your father, and let us know what he thinks about)

I'm finishing to read the book and it's really awesome. If the film is properly adapted the movie will be great. The plot is a lot more subtle that the one from Narnia Chronicles for example, I bet the movie will also be better. I don't know of any atheist trying to boycot that movies...

Yes, it's anti-God and your father is right to boycott it.

It is pro-Atheist
