The Golden Compass is the first book in the series, and some people, mostly over-controlling christian organizations, are advocating a boycott of the movie. The movie script has toned down the religious elements, and is not offensive, but people who haven't done their research and believe every chain email they get still say not to go see it because it will brainwash children.
Because it portrays the church as the devil.
