I agree - Sexy Beast is one of the best and nastiest British gangster films of the era. Superb performances, an amazing script and absolutely NO self-conscious trendiness. But it's not really an easy watch - too nasty - and the evil rabbit thing may have put some people off. Kingsley is probably the scarist villain I have ever seen - those dead black eyes and the monotone voice...brrr.
Guy Richies films are popcorn - they are enjoyable enough if you haven't got anything else to do (I picked up a video of Lock Stock for 50p at a jumble sale - not a bargain but not extortionate either). They pretend to have a veneer of realism but are about as geuine as Mick Jagger's accent. They are in the tradition of the most lightweight of the old Ealing comedies, but without their charm.
Oh, and Glazer didn't cast pretty boys. Just actors.
Yes this is a class film, I like any of the Brit flicks!]]
