What was the name of this horror movie?!

Question: I saw this really scary movie maybe about five years ago, and I still can't figure out what it was called.

It was Hollywood I think, fairly high production standards, but wasn't hugely popular or well-known.

It was about these young adults who are marked or something, and then these things from another dimension start trying to pull them in.

It starts out with a girl who has a longterm boyfriend and is preparing to defend her Ph D (or Master's) thesis. She thinks everything is normal at the beginning...

It ends badly, as in they all get taken by the demon things or whatever they were...

There's also a character of a young man who is an artist and lives in this sort of studio apartment making paintings.

If anyone knows any movies that sound kind of like this... do tell! :) I found this movie surprisingly freaky and would love to see it again.

THEY (2002)

IMDB summary:
While preparing for the examination of her Master Degree in Psychology, Julia Lund (Laura Regan) is called by her friend from childhood Billy Parks (Jo Abrahams) to meet him in a bar. They both had nightmares when they were children, and Billy is totally disturbed with demons from the dark that would be chasing him and commits suicide in front of Julia. The traumatic experience, plus the meeting with two friends of Billy, Sam Burnside (Ethan Embry) and his girlfriend Terry Alba (Dagmara Dominczyk), in the funeral make Julia having nightmares again. When Sam tells her that they four have been tagged in their childhood, and demons are coming to get them to the darkness, Julia becomes afraid of the dark and asks for help to her boyfriend Paul Loomis (Marc Blucas).

I haven't seen this film for several years, but, when it was on a movie channel, I must have watched it at least 10 times and wonder why I didn't tape it. I suppose I thought it would show up again. I especially like it because it doesn't use a lot of gore but relies more on light and shadow and a sharper script than most. The part where she finds that spine under her skin is especially eerie because it seems more dreamlike than real. I expected it to BE a nightmare or hallucination.

I especially like its tagline:
Are you afraid of the dark? You should be.

If I had a movie marathon, I'd team up "They", "Darkness Falls" and~hmmmm~maybe "The Boogeyman".

It's called They
