Why in movies?!

I don't know for certain, but I'd say because it increases the tension and allows the audience to really "get" that the person is being followed. Although this bugs the crap out of me- anytime I've ever been chased I don't look back- it only slows me down.
A perfect example of this is in the Hitchcock movie The Birds. There's a scene where school children are being chased and they keep looking back at the birds- which causes at least 1 kid to fall and get caught by the birds. Every kid who looks back ends up getting pecked on the face and neck.

Yeah, I've noticed that. Also, they don't run like their lives depend on it.

The guy yells 'RUN' with a giant Lizard steaming down the road at them. lol
Also - when a car is chasing a man on foot he usually doesnt catch him hehe

it enhances the drama
