When you're so creeped out and scared that you sleep with the closet light on then you've seen a good horror movie. It's not a bunch of gore and bloody death scenes, its the chill up your spine. Like in The Messengers, when the little boy was eating breakfast and he looked in his spoon and saw the dead little boy creeping towards him on the ceiling. I was like Ahhhhhhhhhhhh turn around!!!

Whew. I got chills just typing this.

usually, good surprises, mysterious ghosts and monsters, scary atmospheres etc

I think the best horror flicks are along the lines of the movie Copycat with Sigorney Weaver(s/p). To me good horror movies are those based with a twinge of reality and possibility. Movies like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street can scare younger people because they "jump out and scare you" or make you afraid to sleep, but since I've gotten older I have found those don't scare me nearly as much as the ones where a crazy person stalks someone and goes on some sort of killing spree. Mostly b/c those seem far more possible than Jason and Freddy.

I like horror movies that actually scare me. Unfortunately, the only one that has been able to scare me is The Exorcist and that one scared me because I was 8 when I watched it.

It's fun to get scared.

Bloooood.... Lots of it....

1) a fiend that is scary both physically and psychologically
2) a group of people where you really don't care what happens to them, and the dumber they are the more enjoyable the torture they are about to receive
3) great gore scenes that will be in your head for a long long time
4) great back story, why this person is doing what he/she is doing
5) fight scenes or great hero
6) an ending that makes you wonder if it is really done or is there more to come....

Good luck and enjoy your movie experience!!!

I think the key is atmosphere. To me that is much more scary than just a lound noise or some one jumping into screen to startle you and make you jump. And the new trend of gore movies like Saw and Hostel just are gore fests and not even scary.
