What's the Problem With..?!
Question: The Golden Compass?? I've been told it has to do with a girl defeating God and everything, but the previews just show that it looks like a normal fantasy movie....
They're calling it a Childrens Movie....
Is there something I'm missing?

nothing is children's movie. every movie has a meaning to it even south park.
I havent seen it or read the books, but i've read alot about the controversy, and apparently there are underlying themes about how organized religion as a whole is bad and we'd be better off without (in the movie clerics & church leaders are evil and do experiments on children and stuff....can anyone say "catholic church").
Anyway, a friend of mine who saw it said it reaslly isnt that bad and it really doesn't promote and "anti-god" agenda, the christian right just doesn't seem to have a sense of humor or the ability to take art for art's sake.
...come on people, the athiest and agnostic community didnt throw a hissy-fit when "Narnia" came out, which was basically the same deal, only in reverse (fantasy movie, with animals fighting, geared towards children, but that movie/book series one was all about how awesome Jesus is).
the guy who wrote the books is an atheist and he wrote the books, and i guess the children are supposed to kill god, so they can do whatever they want. I know that a lot of christian groups are mad about the movie, but the religous things have been played down so they could make the movie.....
the Golden compass movie does not have a thing to do with atheism, the whole problem people are having is that the book was written by an atheist...any aspects of that, that was in the book has been taken out to make it family friendly...people need to get over it...it was a very good movie and i was actually looking for the big controversy that i had heard about and i didnt find much at all, what i found i did because i was looking very hard. so do not let what other people are saying about this movie change your mind, some are just closed minded about things and others are talking about something they didnt even watch, and dont want to take the time to watch
The religious aspects that are in the books have been almost entirely taken out of the movie, to the point that if you didn't know anything about any of the controversy you wouldn't see anything religious at all. It is a childrens movie the way that Chronicles of Narnia was a childrens movie. It's about a couple of otherwise ordinary kids on a wild adventure to save something. And that is exactly how it should be enjoyed. As a FICTIONAL fantasy movie.
