What makes someone a "film snob?"?!

Question: Some boy refused to discuss his Hanukkah present near me because it was a DVD set. I've talked to this boy twice about films, I was Annie Hall for Halloween(he told me I possess no keaton-like-qualities) and I mentioned to him Godard is Jewish. Confused by his statement of never knowing there were any French Jews, I asked him about this and he accused me "of knowing everything (Godard is one of my favourite directors, only reason why I would, and I'm a Jew) and then called me a snob.

I don't go to the local Independent theater and watch new films every week
I only watch classics, and I memorize random facts about films, years, dates awards, birth years of major actors
I wanted to major in film studies when I was younger, sorry if that makes me a snob.
He produces his own films
I never talk about films ever.
Oh yeah TCM is my favourite channel.

i don't think your a film snob but he sounds like one

I wouldn't call you a film snob unless you are going around spouting the random facts just to impress people. At most I might call you a film nerd but not in a mean way, in a cute way!

You're only a film snob if you think you have the greatest taste in the world and consider all your opinions as fact. From your description, you aren't a film snob in the slightest sense. :)

I would call you a Film Geek. I did study film at Emerson College and have my bs in it. There were film snobs there that seemed to just critique old films and tried to be above everyone else. But it just seemed like they were quoting film critics and their professors without even forming their own opinions of what the film means, etc.
Kind of like Godard... personally I am more into popcorn flicks, so I felt the people that spouted Godard is such a genius were just phonies that wanted to look sophisticated.

A film snob tends to be highly selective in films, choosing a director or a performer or a certain era or genre of films.

Adding to this is an arrogance that after a certain point, all films are crap and particular genres will never produce quality, lasting films.

You can enjoy films, but don't endlessly dissect.

i can discuss directing techniques, camera angles, editing, performance, fine. But if you want to find the socio-political ramifications of an agrarian etymology in a cybernized society as evinced by "Gigli", I will have to ask you to put the popcorn down and leave the room
