The golden Compass is the first of 3 films/books.
This first film is about Lyra, a young girl was lives in Oxford among scolars. as it is set in a kind of parralel universe to our own, they have daemons (pronounced 'demon').
these daemons are basically a manifestation of the characters' souls in real form.
There is a misterious group called the Gobblers who are kidnapping the children. these children are being experimented on - their daemons are cut away from them, as a part of soul is cut from them, they become sickly and some die. Lyra's best friend Roger has been kidnapped so Lyra goes on a quest to rescue him whilst running away from Mrs Coulter, who she has befriended, because she is the leader of the Gobblers.

Hope that helps - it's quite a complicated plot....

P.S, dont listen to those saying "they kill God", what they actually do is release a false god from the prison of it's body.

Lyra Belaqua, living in Oxford's Jordan College, is not but a young girl living among scholars. Her world may seem diverse, from physical embodiments of souls that take the shape of an animal, but similar with people around you to become friends and enemies. She is thrown into a perilous adventure when she overhears a conversation of an extraordinary microscopic particle, Dust. This particle is said to unite different worlds, and is feared by many who want to destroy it forever. As Lyra is flung into the middle of this horrible struggle, she meets wondrous creatures both big and small, and villains who are not what they seem. Gobblers, that kidnap children, will turn out in the most unexpected places. And a magical compass of gold that will answer any question if one is skilled enough to read it.

Why the controversies? Well, Theologically liberal Christian finds Philip Pullman (the author of the book) rewarding because his work targets a common enemy: Biblical Christianity. Charming, huh? Shall we go through the list of things this theologian name-checks? Radical feminism in which the true God is “a feminine divine”; Marxism and liberation theology; an outright denial of divine omniscience and omnipotence; a suggestion that — never mind that “Lord” stuff — man’s relationship with God is emphatically not heirarchical; and even a toying with pantheism. It seems to me that Pullman’s books are an attack on religion in general, particularly theism, and most especially Christianity, and if this is the heretical form of Christianity that one can most plausibly squeeze into the structure of his trilogy that kinda reinforces my original conclusion.

Why do they kill God? The writer is an Atheist, you dimwit.

Am reading this book at the moment - plot, so far I have read that a little girl ends up being looked after by scholars and finding out her father is the uncle who visits occasionally. Uncle disappears and lady comes onto the scene who turns out to be her mother (very scary lady, head of scary organisation) who is responsible for the abduction of children for experiments in the north of the world. Something about a solar dust and that witches believe that there are millions of cities in a parallel universe that this little girl is destined to save, using a special althemeter, that can read the truth in future and the peoples statements. Very well written so far, but sorry, do not understand why religious people are angry with it. But there again, they usually are if it questions the bible, God or Jesus! Maybe, just maybe, the bible is wrong and that it is a fictitious rendition of facts that are scientific?
Who will ever know?

religious people are angry about it because at the end of the third book in the trilogy, they kill God. The plot is very complex as the books are pretty long, i'd just suggest you read one or wait till you see the movie, you'lll get it as it goes along. The reason there are talking animals is that everone has a Deamon, an animal that is sort of a part of them, invisibly attached. That's what the animals are.

The books seem to have very anti-Christian themes (some sexual situations and coming of maturity themes, anti-Christ themes like killing God and even naming of some one of two of the characters are Biblical prophets perhaps, and many other things, each character has its own daemon-which to a Christian considering the dark themes of the book might be interpreted as a demon, etc.), and most of that alone would anger or insult Christians. In addition to that, in what Christians view as a 'stealth-campaign', most of the anti-Christian themes have been removed from this first movie, thinking that folks (including Christians) will unknowingly rush out and buy the whole series of books for their kids for Christmas. Ironically, the decision to remove the anti-Christian themes of the books from the movie is said to have angered the atheists as well.

It's good that you don't want to see the movie. It's crude, and violent against the Lord. It was written by an Atheist, and God dies in the movie. Don't see the movie. Please. Thank you!

Hello,

(ANS) The Golden Compass is a big block buster Hollywood movie made for the Xmas UK market, mainly aimed at young ish kids and families (sort of following on from Harry Potter etc.).

However, Johnathan Ross on Film 2007 on BBC1 reviewed this film (as well as News Night Extra on BBC2) both groups slated this film for its extremely poor story line or plot. Meaning the underlying story or plot is VERY thin indeed, sadly its a good story that makes any film worth going to see.

THE STORY, is very loosely about the little girl who meets up with mysterious woman (Nicole Kidman) who is enticed to travel with her in order to find & rescue some other children. Little Girl is betrayed by mysterious bad lady. OK! so that's putting it very simplistically but thats basically what the films is about.

**The things that were praised by Ross & News Night Extra were the special effects which use the latest CGI technology to create the talking animals.

**The little girl actress was also highly priased for her ability to work with the CGI animals.

YES! VERY Lavish visuals & special effects BUT a film has to be more than special effects to be worth going to see. You cannot make a film purely from the special effects alone. Give me a brillaint story & no special effects any day. Some of the best films ever dont use special effects. Such as Laurel & Hardy and the Piano which is totally brilliant and will have you crying from laughter.

Finally, the film got a very low rating by both programs 6 or 7 out of 10 rating.
