Why doesn't the church like The Golden Compass movie??!

It's because the books that the movie is based of off was written by a writer that claimed to be an atheist, and the church is very easily offended by anyone who believes anything different than they say.
I think it's going to be a great movie, and I can't wait until I get to see it.
(The same thing happened with Harry Potter, but only because magic was involved. The church is weird about certain things.)

The movie is not about religion, It is a beautiful exciting fantasy movie.
The church objects to the fact that the books they take the story from are written by an atheist and are his anti religion views.
The movies are not that and, I think, should be left alone.
"The church" is not a single entity.
many church groups are quite fine with evolution, for example.
for some, it would appear that most any kind of "magic" is indicative of the devil.
The "His Dark Materials" book series, is written by Philip Pullman, an atheist. In these books, there is a powerful ruling body called the "Magesterium" that reflects the church. These are the 'bad guys' and the main character Lyra spends the series trying to destroy them.
And in the end God dies.
That's why the church hates it.
Although apparently in the movie they have changed the plot so that it isn't about religion at all.
The church feels it promotes atheism and an anti-god view point. This is because the child in the film is on a mission to kill god. Contributing to this belief is the fact that the novel the movie was based on was written by an outspoken atheist. Apparently the production company is claiming that it has kept most of the religious material out of the film and left a watered down version of the novels. However, the church still believes that the movie will encourage children to reads the anit-religious novels.
