I'm thinking "Lord of the Rings". Each of the characters could have a movie based around them specifically, and it work just fine. ("Legolas Strikes Back - This Time, It's Personal").

Some critics say that the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy are weighed down heavily in excessive plot. I followed them just fine; but the material definitely could have made an entirely new film.
