if you mean in real life it was special effects....in the video game The Chron. of Riddick at butchers bay they show how he gets them..by some witch doctor who does vodoo on him to get him to see in the caves he was about to enter.... and they show a little history of him and Johns..... but in the movie i cant remember what he told the girl something about by a witch doctor i think

I'm sure it was with contacts and probably special (digital) effects done after filming.
They were contact lenses that Vin Diesel had to wear. Other times they his eyes were computer enhanced for certain shots.
