In the movie "The Natural", why does Harriet Bird shoot Roy Hobbs and !

Question: What was Harriet Bird's motive for doing it? If she was paid to do it, why did she kill herself? I never understood this part of the movie.

You'll catch a glimpse of a newspaper killing in the beginning detailing the murder of another sports star. When she realizes Roy will indeed be the the greatest there ever was in baseball (he as much sells her on it with his passion and ego) she decides he will 'complete the circle' as it were.

Read the book, it explains the character a lot more.

OMG, SPOILERZ

Remember that before Roy, she was targeting the batter....a Babe Ruth look alike in the movie....then when Roy stuck him out - she went for him. She wanted to destroy the top performer in baseball. Not sure why....not sure why she killed herself afterwards.

You got me. I love baseball, but I found this movie (and book) completely bafflling.

Various interpretations. One is that she wanted to possess the fame of the athlete for herself (she asks "Are you the best there ever was?").
